Saint Teresa of Avila

Teresa of Ávila was born in Ávila, Spain, in 1515, and entered a Carmelite convent as a young woman. Her life unfolded amid the religious debates and reforms of sixteenth-century Spain. After years of prayer and reflection, she became a leading force in the reform of the Carmelite order, seeking a more austere and contemplative way of life. She founded communities of Discalced Carmelites and worked closely with the younger friar John of the Cross. Teresa wrote in Spanish rather than Latin, addressing both fellow nuns and a wider circle of readers. Her prose grew out of practical experience: she was concerned with how people pray, how they understand their inner lives, and how they persevere amid everyday demands.

Among her best-known works are Libro de la vida, Camino de perfección, Las moradas (often called The Interior Castle), and Libro de las fundaciones. Across them, Teresa returns to prayer, humility, self-knowledge, friendship, and the difficulty of describing spiritual experience. Her voice is candid and alert, often turning to familiar images and conversational asides to make demanding ideas approachable. She can be both a careful guide and a lively storyteller, attentive to the practical details of communal life as well as to inward change. Teresa was canonized in 1622 and later named a Doctor of the Church, an acknowledgment of the lasting reach of her spiritual writing. These books offer a rewarding place to encounter her distinctive mix of candor, discipline, and insight.
