Listening to the opening to the Fat Man is a nostalgic return to a simplier time. Why would the Fat Man go into the drugstore? Just to weigh himself. At that time, most drugstores had a penny scale where you could weigh yourself and get a little card that gave your fortune with a picture of a movie star on the other side. These were also sold at Kresge's and Woolworth's Five and Dime Stores. Another reason he could be going in would be to buy a bottle of his sponsor's product, Pepto Bismal, which was also sold by the glass at the soda fountain like Bromo Seltzer. Bromo Seltzer also was the sponsor of Inner Sanctum Mysteries. The Fat Man's weight of 237 lbs. today is not unusual due to the fast food diets of many Americans. Back then, 237 lbs. would seem enormous to some young listeners who may have only seen a obese person in a carnival side show.
I really like The Fat Man, But, Why is this?...

I have grown to really like The Fast Man. I ran across him early in my exploration of Old Radio. I have found most of what remains of the Dective type shows and The Fat Man keeps being on the top of my 'list' of favorites. Even before I stumbled across the more complete list, I would replay the show regularly, because it is so well done. It must be something about the way the characters are portrayed, as I cant say the writing or plots are extrordnary. Whatever the majic is, it keeps working, both the Austrailian and American shoes have it. Why is it that I find more complete bunck of 'Fat Man' episodes contained in 'The Archive', on a LINK fron a completely different Web Site?

Forget about all of those slim, handsome, suave, debonair types of detective. Here is a real MAN's detective... The ladies seem attracted to this 237 (or 249 depending on which episode you listen to) pound irresistible he-man too!
If only there were more

I do like the fat man, even the ones from Australia. I have heard the music on other OTR shows, I just can't remember which one
