Night Beat
The Joe Hehn Memorial Collection
Night Beat was one of radio's finest series for its writing, creativity, production, and its performances. The series starred Frank Lovejoy, in a role that seemed perfect for him, a reporter (Randy Stone) covering overnight stories in Chicago. Randy encountered all kinds of people in all kinds of difficult situations. He got his best stories by trying to help them or help make things right. The series had its occasional funny or lighthearted moments but it could also be gritty and dark. Frank Worth's highly atmospheric music marvelously evoked the night world in which Randy Stone worked. * * * These recordings are part of the Joe Hehn Memorial Collection. Mr. Hehn (1931-2020) was a pioneering collector of radio recordings when the hobby emerged in the 1960s. Digitizing his collection of reel tapes and discs is the effort of a wide range of North American volunteers, and includes assistance of some international collectors. The groups supporting this effort with their funds, time, technology and skills are the Old Time Radio Researchers and a small group of transcription disc preservationists who refer to themselves as the "The Knights of the Turning Table."
