Discovering Buddhism
Geshe Thubten Sherab
Discovering Buddhism is an experiential exploration of the teachings of the Buddha, organized in the context of the lam-rim, the stages of the path to enlightenment, which is the traditional approach for study and practice in the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism. Geshe Thubten Sherab teaches Module #3: Presenting the Path. A five session overview of the entire Tibetan Buddhist path to awakening. Study the life story of the Buddha and discover a unique system for putting Buddhist philosophy into practice – the lam-rim, or “graduated path to enlightenment.” Geshe Sherab taught September through October 2016 Ven. Tenzin Drolma taught May through August 2016. VENERABLE TENZIN DROLMA was born in Chicago, US. She started studying Buddhism at the age of 17 in high school and studied more Buddhism along with Psychology in college. She received her undergraduate degree in Religious Studies, Philosophy and Psychology. She has a graduate degree in Counseling Psychology from the University of Denver. She worked in the mental health field primarily with children and practiced meditation and Buddhism casually until 2005. In 2005 she met Tibetan Buddhism at a weekend retreat with Ven. Robina Courtin at Vajrapani Institute. Six months later she moved to Portland to study at Maitripa College with Yangsi Rinpoche. She received her Master's Degree in Buddhist Studies in 2012 upon completion of her thesis. Ven. Drolma was ordained as a nun in the Tibetan tradition in 2009. She moved to Vajrapani Institute and was resident sangha and assistant SPC from 2011 to 2015. While at Vajrapani Institute she taught courses and lead meditations. In November 2016, she is going to India to teach and do retreat for six months. Ven. Drolma’s teaching style includes the psychological aspects of Buddhism and she has been described as a very approachable teacher. While strongly based in the tradition of the Gelukpa school, her teaching emphasizes those aspects most helpful to modern students.
