Riveting yarn

(5 stars)

The reader of this story kept me so interested in this story. I listened far too late into the night and thoroughly enjoyed it. His accent is strong but so very understandable. The use of slight variations in voices and tones made the characters come to life and made it easy to follow along. The author had an interesting way of making all of the characters believable. Even the “normal” characters had flaws and there was no perfect hero or heroine as are usually to be found in stories from this era. I found that interesting and more enjoyable. I would read more from this author and hope to find more recordings by ArgyEll!

Great reader, mixed read

Very well read by ArgyEll (RGL?). I can't imagine there are many Librivox volunteers who could do the accents. The only glaring mispronunciation was "apostolic" -- probably not one for future reference, although doctrinal differences between Christian denominations do feature quite heavily in places here. The story itself is a ripping yarn very much of its time, with barely credible events and a cast of bizarre characters. It did keep my interest, though. The book seems to have been something of a potboiler. The setting is supposedly Northumberland, yet the court scene is in Scotland, with a sheriff presiding and a fiscal. There are other inconsistencies too.
