"But it is not for those who heard the call in the later months so much as in memory of those early heroes of Mons, who knew the bitterness of a valiant retreat, the horror of forced marches along parched roads, with only the prod of the next man's bayonet to keep him awake, and only a flap cut from the tail of his shirt between the pitiless sun and the dreaded delirium that would leave him a prey to the Huns' barbarities; in memory of these it is that I take up the pen to run the gauntlet of a thousand critical eyes on a way fraught with difficulties." ~ Kate John Finzi (5 hr 13 min)

interesting and well read.

I loved the reader. The story is written by a young British woman who was there, so the views of the period are reflected. Some of the reviewers have (rightfully?) taken offense, but i think it is a valuable perspective from the often ignored medical part of the service, especially during this critical transition from being an unorganized group to being a major arm of the military. Despite the view of the enemy as evil and uncivilized, when she runs into them as patients her eyes are opened slightly. I loved the honesty in the writing and the observations from her microcosm. Many of us in modern times can't understand the one-sided blind hatred of the subhuman enemy; this helps me understand the views of the older generation of my family. I've actually listened to this twice.

The Shelf2Life WWI Memoirs Collection is an engaging set of pre-1923 materials that describe life during the Great War through memoirs, letters and diaries. Poignant personal narratives from soldiers, doctors and nurses on the front lines to munitions workers and land girls on the home front, offer invaluable insight into the sacrifices men and women made for their country. Photographs and illustrations intensify stories of struggle and survival from the trenches, hospitals, prison camps and battlefields. The WWI Memoirs Collection captures the pride and fear of the war as experienced by combatants and non-combatants alike and provides historians, researchers and students extensive perspective on individual emotional responses to the war. http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/7700752-eighteen-months-in-the-war-zone

Women in World War One

The Red Cross volunteer's & a diary one kept from arriving in 1914 to 1916. How unprepared the the British,French & allies were. The Red Cross Nurses had to endure with little to none medical, medicine, food, clean water, bedding, shelter etc. The conditions were horrible. Yet, the nurses endured & provided caring for all soldiers, friend or foe. A must read to understand this moment in history.
