At the time of this broadcast, the US was already at war, possibly 1942. The program was heard over KMPC, the West Coast affiliate of Detroit's WJR, where the show originated in the late Thirties. Mel Johnson, a 24 year old actor, played the part of the Hermit. Paul Hughes, whose growly voice was often heard on the Lone Ranger, played the part of misery plantation owner. Olga Coal was the sponsor as evidenced by the patriotic appeal to listeners to conserve their coal in keeping with wartime restrictions.
