A novel written in three volumes. In the golden age of steam, the London train wends its way across the Tamar into the strange and mystic land that is Cornwall, having left most of its length at Plymouth. A weary doctor gazes at the countryside, when the train grinds to a halt and his professional attention is demanded. A young woman. An apparent suicide. Who was she? What brought her to Cornwall? What drove her to kill herself? Or did she? - Summary by Lynne Thompson (17 hr 19 min)

A very good mystery! There are 3 storylines & you go back and forth between them. You shouldn't get confused by this. It makes things more interesting. There aren't so many characters that you can't keep up either. My only gripe is that a couple of chapters before the last one tend to go into detail about a lady & I just didn't care. I felt I already knew enough about her at that point.

The good, the bad, and something inbetween

The villain is loved & admired, he's a psychopath and fine gentleman. There's a great deal of discussion of good and bad behaviours, plus an intriguing whodunnit. I couldn't "put the book down". For once I did figure out who must have done it quite early on but that was far from the only interest in the story. Forgiveness, until quite recently of the "crime passionel" is, I hope, unthinkable today - though I can see the logic of jealousy being mental disturbance, IMO it's pure selfishness & no more forgiveable than any other murder. The confession and lack of remorse were shocking. I wondered if Wyllard's illness was MS. Lynn Thomas' reading was excellent – well-paced, clear & easy to listen to.

expertly read

Every time I read or listen to another ME. Braddon book I think ‘ now that’s my favourite so far ‘, well , except The Doctors Wife, which I didn’t finish; the reader is one of my favourite and does an excellent job, Another murder mystery from one of the most prolific writers of the 19th century With a glimpse into life in rural Cornwall and France; not quite as long as some of her other novels but with some long chapters; quite easy to figure out who the murderer was but the story is interesting enough to keep listening to see if they get their just deserts

Great Story

One of my favorites by Braddon. A mystery, a love story, action and intrigue, all on one book. A very clever story, and plenty of details so that you really feel like you get to know these characters. MEB was really a fantastic author in her time, with intriguing stories and clever characters.

Lynne Thompson is such a great reader. I really enjoyed her reading of this Classic Victorian mystery. It’s a long book, a little plodding at times, and I can’t say that the outcome isn’t predictable, but hearing how the mystery began to unfold held my interest for the duration.

really good

Took me a while to get invested in the story, but it was worth it. It almost felt like the author wasn’t sure about where she was going in the beginning! Well worth the listen!

Pretty good book. Unfortunately there were times I couldn’t understand the reader-once in a while it sounded like she was speaking into a tin can or something. Made me loose interest.

Very enjoyable book. From the 5th chapter I couldn't put it down. Love the narrator as well.
