Besides outlines of the principal events, this narrative includes many biographical sketches, together with the anecdotes and sayings to which allusions are often made in literature, politics, and arts. When I was at school in England history was taught from a very British perspective so, for me, this book was enlightening to say the least. Most reading is of a good standard but one or two readers struggle.
