Devlin the Barber
B. L. Farjeon
Lu par Lee Smalley

The stabbing death of a beautiful young woman in a London park at night and the disappearance of her sister; a shocked and heartbroken young suitor; a terrified landlady and her simple husband; a recently unemployed man, the narrator, who is requested to investigate the crime; and the mysterious title character who, as his name suggests, has a devilishness about him in his psychic ability to read minds and to perform other supernatural acts. These are some of the individuals in this inventive, absorbing mystery by the prolific and popular British author, B. L. Farjeon. There are really two mysteries here: the murder and the strange – person? – known as Devlin. ( Lee Smalley) (6 hr 28 min)

Critiques

Tellmeatale
Good mystery & good narration! I just felt like the part with the landlady was a bit drawn out.But all in all a good murder mystery!
beware spoilers in reviews!

Writing a review in part to push a review with spoilers lower! Good reader and decent mystery story, although slow in parts. I think my favorite part is Devlin's artistic products we meet in the interview with his landlady. Very humorous!

A LibriVox Listener
Too slow, too much detail, but good reader.
build up better than resolution

I liked the way the story started, setting the scene, introducing the characters. Build up was fine. But then it just ended via Deus ex Machina and I was terribly disappointed at the lack of a climax/conflict/confrontation. Well read though.

I love discovering new authors, and this is a great example. The novel has an interesting, if sometimes verbose plot with some surprises. The reader is excellent. I will definitely listen to more Fargeon.
Had me guessing til the end!

Jessie

Good Story.

The moment our hero asks the young lover about his guardian's whereabouts, it becomes obvious the guardian I'd guilty and his motive too. How the parents didn't know their other daughter, not Lizzy, was killed that night is an absurd mystery though. And why Devlin runs away after saving the day? Well....a lot left to our imagination.
