(4.5 stars; 12 reviews)

Fascinating book for all ages telling of travels through Africa over 100 years ago. Covering the continent by steamer and train and other more primitive means of transport, the reader will enjoy learning of African life long before knowledge of this continent was available to most people throughout the world. Summary by BettyB.

Note: This text was published more than 100 years ago in 1905.The listener should be aware that the descriptions of the native peoples, their dress and home life reflected the perceptions and thinking of the early 20th century which some listeners may find offensive.

Reseñas

Full of fascinating information

(5 stars)

These books are a delight, and the reader is a joy. I've listened to several of the Carpenter's Geographical Reader books, all read by Betty B - a huge undertaking, as each book is many hours long and there are several in the series. Of course some of the information is wildly out of date, although most of it remains relevant today. Instead of a dry textbook, these books are bursting with life. Full of vivid accounts of people, and places, notes on local costumes and customs, local foods and religions, architecture, how various economies run, exports, histories of each destination, etc, all composed in a very approachable, personal style, as if the listener is on a trip with the author, who is constantly awed by their surroundings. In an era where you could climb the pyramids, and buy your own mummy to ship home, these are an amazing record of events as they were at the time. They are certainly unlike any textbooks published today, and are a brilliant listen. Thank you Betty B for all your hard work
