The nineteenth century saw the expansion in popularity of travel among the wealthy. The dismissive account of Lady Hester Stanhope OMITS to mention she led the first archaeological excavation in Palestine, at Ashkelon, using enlightened techniques. Also omits her taking to man's clothes after the shipwreck & living in male attire thereafter. Also OMITS she was the Prime Ministers official hostess,as his neice, sat at the head of his table, counselling & advising the PM & Cabinet - all the writer says is she looked after him while he died but she was a leading influential political figure. So phooey! Don't care for his distorted version of Stanhope, not interested in his other distortions!
