Adam Bede, the first novel written by George Eliot (the pen name of Mary Ann Evans), was published in 1859. It was published pseudonymously, even though Evans was a well-published and highly respected scholar of her time. The novel has remained in print ever since, and is used in university studies of 19th century English literature.

The story's plot follows four characters rural lives in the fictional community of Hayslope—a rural, pastoral and close-knit community in 1799. The novel revolves around a love triangle between beautiful but thoughtless Hetty Sorrel, Captain Arthur Donnithorne, the young squire who seduces her, Adam Bede, her unacknowledged lover, and Dinah Morris, Hetty's cousin, a fervent Methodist lay preacher.

Reseñas

good novel, good readers

(4 stars)

all the readers. a fine collaborative. And as always thank you to all the readers who give thier time for free to make these great books available to all, especially those of us who can't afford to buy audio books. i find it thoughtless that so many listeners who are so critical of the voices of readers they don't like. let them go buy the audio book then.

Unevenly Read

(3 stars)

While several of the readers are quite good, others are mediocre and a couple are insufferable. Unfortunately I don't have names or chapters for the weak readers. I am nearly done with the audiobook and have found no chapters that I could not get through, but if listening for enjoyment, be aware that some readers will not provide that.

Great story of a tragedy redeemed

(3.5 stars)

Most of the readers did well, but there are some who just should not do it. I'm sorry to say so because it seems unkind, but reading out loud simply is not for everyone & they'd do better to find their true talents. Five stars for the story, 3 for the reading overall.

fails to adequately tie together

(2 stars)

(spoiler). after the seeming climax in which Hetty is pardoned, she is simply cast aside and forgotten, whereas Adam inexplicably and unrealistically falls i. love with Dinah. This book is a poor man's Tess of the D'Urbervilles (though Hardy wrote that decades later)

horrid

(1 stars)

so badly read by a reader who sounds like she learned to read Avery recently. I had to stop listening after a few minutes.

Excellent story

(4 stars)

Another great story by GE. Some readers more to my taste than oters. Thanks to all of them for their contributions.

A fine tale of country folk of yesteryear

(5 stars)

The efforts of readers appreciated, but some poor recording and pronunciation, and rare accents difficult.

LONG LONG

(4.5 stars)

The first 40 chapters drag a bit, but it is still a fine story. The readers mostly did a fine job.
