Join The Navy - Cmdr. Charles Brendler

Cmdr. Charles Brendler, born in 1898, joined the Navy at the age of 15. His unique enlistment began in New York City, where he auditioned on board the USS Florida. Brendler was the only musician to pass the physical, but he had to conceal his age from recruiters.

Throughout his career, Brendler served in various capacities, eventually becoming the Leader of the Navy Band in January 1942. Under his leadership, the band expanded significantly, allowing them to perform at dances, formal concerts, and governmental functions. Tragically, in 1960, 19 members of the Navy Band lost their lives in a plane crash, marking a somber moment in the band's history.

Brendler's service in the Navy Band lasted until 1962, culminating in an impressive 49 years of service. He was the first Navy musician to achieve the rank of Commander, leading the band through significant historical events, including World War II and the early Cold War.
