The Elect Lady

Two farmer's sons and a cotter's daughter, though on different rungs of the social scale, formed a close bond in childhood as they learned together how to follow Jesus. When adults, their lives are bound up in unusual ways with those of their landlord, his daughter, and her cousin. How will the Laird's secret affect them all?

One of MacDonald's shorter and lesser-known novels, "The Elect Lady" yet contains wonderfully endearing characters, plot twists, love, and life lessons. As always, read with discernment as MacDonald's controversial (sometimes unbiblical) beliefs are presented. - Summary by HannahMary (6 hr 1 min)

Though-Provoking Little Tale

(4 stars)

As a young person who loves and tries to preserve old/rare books, and has been collecting quite a personal library, this book was convicting! It made me reexamine the place Possessions hold in my heart. I think of the saying 'you can't take it with you' (not to mention, 'where your treasure is...') This book is a tale of a character who would not accept that, contrasted with the simple faith of his maid. It was shorter and had less depth than some MacDonald books, but was enjoyable. The readers were good overall, and as usual Hannah and Devorah (who read the chapters with Scots dialect) were excellent!

Wonderful story

(5 stars)

This little novel is not among MacDonald's best known and loved novels, but it contains some wonderful gems, as do all MacDonald's writings. Well worth the listen!
