Brian Friel -- Translations RTE

(5 estrellas; 3 reseñas)

Staged at the height of The Troubles in the north of Ireland, Translations is set in the summer of 1833 in a hedge-school in Donegal. The schoolmaster's prodigal son is about to return from Dublin, accompanied by two army officers. Their aim is to create a map of the area, replacing Irish place-names with English equivalents, leading to unexpected and violent consequences.

The play explores the relationship between language and culture, highlighting the impact of anglicization on a small Irish town. As the characters navigate love and identity amidst the backdrop of cultural conflict, the story unfolds with a love triangle involving Manus, Yolland, and Maire. The narrative concludes ambiguously, leaving the audience to ponder the unresolved tensions of nationhood and cultural heritage.
