Orson Welles Heart Of Darkness
Orson Welles und Joseph Conrad
Orson Welles' Heart of Darkness is a broadcast premiere of Welles’ unproduced screenplay based on Joseph Conrad's celebrated novel. Set in the 1890s, the story follows Marlow, a skipper hired to navigate the Congo River in search of Mr. Kurtz, a senior agent of an ivory trading company who has mysteriously disappeared. As Marlow and his crew venture deeper into the jungle, they encounter a growing sense of danger and unsettling rumors about Kurtz.
This adaptation is part of Unmade Movies, a season featuring radio adaptations of unproduced screenplays by major 20th-century authors. Welles wrote this screenplay in 1939, intending to direct and star in the production. However, the audacity of the script led to it being shelved in favor of his second script, Citizen Kane.
