After both of Joyce's parents passed away, her beloved aunt raised her. But when her aunt gets sick and dies, Joyce's world turns upside down. No longer feeling welcome in her childhood home, she flees during the night to escape the cruel treatment of her aunt's son and his wife. With very little money and only the clothes on her back, Joyce tries to make a new life for herself. Her faith in her Lord is the one thing that keeps her going, no matter how difficult life becomes. - Summary by Emily Grace (7 hr 59 min)

As usual GLH gives us a solid well rounded narrative. Excellent reader!

Typical GLH. Thank you Reader, especially for your singing!

One of her more memorable stories

I remembered this book, from many years ago, chiefly for the house-moving scene! GLH's Depression-era books are always fascinating for their detailed descriptions of the ways people "made do", and this one also includes an excellent recipe for baking ham. ...And then there is the crackerjack story...

OH, SO GOOD

A fresh breath of air is this encouraging read. Thank God for the Christian authors of the past….where oh where will the present and future Light glow forth! Blessings to all who provide these services. Thank you LibriVox !!!!

Excellent Read

This is a fascinating book! It's a typical novel - everything turns out ok for the main character in the end. But GLH keeps you listening. The narrator is amazing!

A good listen with a Great reader.

Ok story line but about half way through it really touched my heart. It just cracks me up how down trodden the heroins always are but they are always beautiful and the best at doing whatever tasks are set before them. God can and does provide but not always on our time table.

Adventure, Mystery, Romance, Faith

Good reader. As it is a dated story, I disagree with the Pastor in it saying that people who have Jesus couldn't possibly be a patient at an “Assylum.” Christians can struggle with mental health challenges. Sometimes with a spiritual component and sometimes purely physical. Otherwise the story is encouraging to ones faith.

sweet story

A well read , well rounded story. Loved the little house, it made for such a sweet listen. The legal stuff made no sense and would never have held ground in real life, but suited the story I guess. Overall an enjoyable read and great narrator. Lovely that she sang the hymnes for us.
