Fun Chicago Detective Story!

This is a wonderful detective story. The criminal gang and the references to "hootch" reminded me of the days of Al Capone and the references to Chicago streets, buildings and parks were spot on. I loved the twist at the end - surprising but well tied in to make a fitting and believable ending. Overall, a quickly moving, engaging and light story. Jo Smallheer does an excellent job of reading this solo Librivox project. Her voicing really adds to the characters and the flow of the narrative.

A shot rings out in the night, and a witness calls the police. Investigating the room where the shot was heard, the police find no body, and it is the witness who finds a pool of blood. A girl near the room heard nothing, but the police notice a pinprick bruise on her arm. Clearly something sinister is going on. What is the secret of the doings in Sheridan Road? I found this one held my attention. The reader was also excellent, as was the quality of the recordings. Enjoy!

Good Detective Tale

Growing up in Illinois and spending parts of my summers at my aunts in Chicago this story put me in mind of all the stories I heard of the old gangster days of the city. This is a very good detective story and has a few good twist and two good main characters. Excellent narration by one of my favorites J.M. Smallheer . I seek out her selections and listen to as many as I can find. This is really worth a listen if you like a good detective tale.

Entertaining Story

A nice romantic story of intrigue and danger from a bygone era. The reading is even and clear except for a brief attempt at a Swedish accent, which left me unable to understand some dialogue. Fortunately, this was for a minor character and was very brief. Also, the "action" scenes aren't as sophisticated as we are used to these days, but if one can suspend expectations in that area, the story is an easy listen with little violence.

the hero turns out to be a creeper who lies to get the women.

Well read But the detective keeps a big secret from the daughter to "protect her" or more likely to make sure she would not blame him for killing her father. hi didnt pull the trigger but he got him out of the way and ends up with the girl and her money which would have been gained illegally. Couldn't happen even 100 years ago.

It's so great to listen to a reader who is empathetic to the story and provides emotional content so the listener gets more involved. And it's sad that more of these old books aren't presented by such artists as this one. The story, of course, is representative of a long gone era, but well told and involving. The listener gets caught up into the plot. Well done

Classic Detective fiction

Perfect example of a 1950's detective noir mystery. Interesting contrasts with modern life in gentler times- even the villain acts the gentleman! But the plot twist will surprise and story is leisurely yet suspenseful. The reader is also one of the best: no misleading accent or excess trying to affect different types of voices.

personally, I enjoyed this book and it's story book ending; it brought tears to my eyes; I've lead a wandering life similar to the main characters; they resolve their longings for a structured supportive life; for me that shall never be; quietly, without notice, the years slipped by taking that possibility with it.
