The Web of the Golden Spider

The Web of the Golden Spider is a tale of mystery, intrigue and adventure that begins in the city, progresses to a mutinous open sea voyage, eventually leading to the remotest areas on the slopes of the Andes of South America. Wilson, our hero, finds himself in the midst of a battle between a deposed queen and revolutionists who have banded together in an effort to bring their country together as a republic. Wilson, although torn between helping mercenaries, freedom fighters and revolutionaries, is more concerned with the rescuing of the girl he has fallen in love with, but who has been snatched from him by a mysterious priest. That, and the finding of the famed treasure of El Dorado rumored to have been buried beneath Lake Guadiva. (Introduction by Roger Melin.) (10 hr 34 min)

fantastical but fun

i was so certain something was going to happen to the treasure at the last moment and they’d turn out to be rich in love instead. well, something happened, all right! this was a fun read although the author certainly didn’t hold back from the sexism and racism. i did not like the explanation for the priest, its another instance of infantilising the heathen and therefore of lower intelligence native people, which is such a tired old racist trope. the treasure hunting parts were certainly enjoyable, although i was certainly wondering how this ‘primitive’ race of people was managing to build undetectable traps and doors into solid cliff side that could be opened with a touch the narration was excellent, as is everything done by this reader
fun but too shallow for believability

Like the other reviewer said, the unjust war in particular, but also other elements, make you disconnect from the characters and the storyline. it's a series of interesting events that don't really hang together. it starts better than it ends. it's entertaining though.

This was a fun adventure. The book had love, war and a search for lost treasure. It reminded me of an Indiana Jones film. Roger is an excellent reader.
a great yarn

Very cheesy. It could have come from a high school literature class.
