Dr. Montessori's Own Handbook

Lu par Phil Chenevert

(4.4 stars; 42 reviews)

This is the authoritative book written by Montessori to describe her methods. It gives an overview of the Montessori Method as developed for 3 to 6 year olds. It is a short work, intended as a manual for teachers and parents, detailing the materials used as well as her philosophy in developing them. "As a result of the widespread interest that has been taken in my method of child education, certain books have been issued, which may appear to the general reader to be authoritative expositions of the Montessori system. I wish to state definitely that the present work, the English translation of which has been authorized and approved by me, is the only authentic manual of the Montessori method ..." M. Montessori in the Preface ( Summary by Phil Chenevert ) (2 hr 43 min)

Critiques

(4 stars)

If you've read her main book, then this would be considered supplemental material to that. Definitely worth a read if you are looking to teach her methods.

Nice reading, thank you. Somewhat unclear description of rods and music lessons, hard to imagine without seeing the picture.

(5 stars)

It was read well and heard clearly. The book is simply an overview of the Montessori Methods.

I have always wanted to "read it"

(5 stars)

it has many tips on tactile experiences

The content is not convincing. But the reader was good.

(3 stars)

The reader is good. The content, not convincing. Given that the Montessori kindergardens are so much in fashion today, I wanted to see what all the fuss is about. Although a well defined method, I do not see it as critically different from normal kindergardens teaching methods today. Montessori's method could have been an innovation when it was invented 100 years ago, but the world had evolved since then. The fact that some of the practices described in this book are common parts of education today might very well be the very merit of Montessori's work, if that was the first time they were mentioned and treated at a serious level.

Cultural Imperialism

(4.5 stars)

This White person feels that she can impose her white pedagogy on everyone just because of her white privilege. In actuality BIPOCs learn completely differently from the white oppressors. She has no right to impose white values and culture on BIPOCs. Montessori's teachings need to be reimagineered by an international committee of non-binary BIPOCs.
