Faced with inherited debts, an estate to maintain, and no money to pay for either, brothers John and Robert Allard have a difficult decision to make. How much of their integrity are they willing to compromise in order to save their aunt and cousin from a life of poverty and to preserve "all that they call life"? Two young men with a classical education, no trade, and no outstanding talents have little chance to make the fortune they need while staying on the right side of the law. Especially as they only have six months..... ( Summary by Arlene Stebbins) (5 hr 35 min)

Oh I LOVED this story

There is so much to this story, I don't know where to start. The tale starts with the brother who lost the toss ending up in prison. A friend of his past helps him to escape and start his life over again. This friend, however, now needs his help because he is caught in a tangled web of politics that may end in the usurping of the boy king, or in his own death. This story is just wonderful, political intrigue, and oh did I have to keep listening until the end. Reader was excellent, this story is a keeper!
Interesting story. Well read.

Thank you to the volunteer readers. (I liked "The Thing from the Lake" by this same author). This story was a little hard to follow the details of what was going on in a few places, very briefly, but didn't take away that much from enjoying the story. The ending was a bit of a pleasant surprise with what happened with the 17 yr-old ruler.
