The Mysteries of London Vol. I part 2

(4.5 stars; 23 reviews)

The Mysteries of London was a best-selling novel in mid-Victorian England. The first series was published in weekly instalments from 1844-46, priced at a penny each. Serialised novels sold in this way were known as Penny Dreadfuls … without any claim to literary greatness, they sought to provide ongoing entertainment for the popular audience.

When first published, this book was intended for an adult audience. The crime and vice involved would have had a terrible effect on the Young Mind of the Victorian Era. However, it’s less likely to cause offence or concern now, though I don’t recommend it for younger children. - Summary by Cori (24 hr 20 min)

Excellent Reading

(4 stars)

I would like to congratulate Dave Wills on his reading of this crazy but enjoyable story. I'm guessing he is a trained actor as this is pretty much professional standard. I've wanted to read Mysteries of London for years but could never get hold of a copy, so I am so glad that I found Librivox.

Captivating!

Remembering that each episode is part of a serialised Penny Dreadful magazine novel, the listener can appreciate the author's careful, fast-moving action and overlapping themes without any confusion. Yes, the reader is also first-rate.

Dreadfully Delightful

An amazing artifact of the Victorian era! I cannot imagine a more perfect trader for it than Mr. Wills. Bravissimo!

Good story. Part 1 is more interesting, though.
