This book was written about 150 years ahead of its time. It tells the story of Emmeline Mobwray who grows up in a dysfunctional family and has to find herself against all odds. Orphaned at a young age, she has to stay alone in a remote castle under the care of a kind housekeeper. But when the kind housekeeper dies, the family starts to take interest in her- to mixed results. Her cousin becomes obsessed with her, much to the displeasure of his wealthy and arrogant parents. Thus, Emmeline is forced to run away from the only home she knew in order to escape his attentions. Would Emmeline be able to stand up to him at the end or, like many of her contemporaries, would she be forced into a loveless match? Can Emmeline survive in a society predominated by wealth without money or connections? And is Emmeline's family the only one with problems? Throughout the novel, Emmeline learns to create and sustain true friendships and grows up to her role as a woman of that era- with all that it entails." (summary by Stav Nisser) (23 hr 25 min)

Reseñas

such a wonderful journey

(5 stars)

I have listened to the entire work, and returned to various chapters. now I am starting it all over again. Warning: this is LONG. like "War and Peace" long!! 24+ HOURS long! there Are multiple readers, and there are many phrases/conversations in French. That being said, I do believe this could turn out to be my FAVORITE (non-children's) BOOK- ever! as a women living in 2017, the customary lot of a gentlewoman is horrid. But in the 1700s, young Emmaline is a superheroine and Saint! I love the length which allows the author to demonstrate that a girl wasn't guaranteed a tidy happy ever after ending. We are allowed glimpses of many married & engaged couple relationships. We are also shone the "marketplace" in which a girl is thrown, like it or not. this book is gooooooood. it would be an AWESOME Masterpiece Theatre series....

Beautiful story. Meme line is a great example of how to be a kind and gentle women in the face of many situations where many loose control of their emotions, which leads to a irrevocable change in their life’s path. I wish we had more Emmelines in the world!

very long, but interesting. A lot of fainting, too tight corsets, these people had nothing to do,so all kinds of drama went on. Idle entitled young men.
