Holmes and Watson are in Scotland to stay at run down tenement in the Old Town near Edinburgh Castle. Holmes has reason to believe his rival, Professor Moriarty, may have taken up residence in the Old Town. Upon arrival, Holmes tells Watson of the mysterious events that have taken place there, that have driven most occupants away, of ghosts and the devil playing bagpipes.
