Holmes and Watson are in Scotland to stay at a run-down tenement in the Old Town near Edinburgh Castle. Holmes has reason to believe his rival, Professor Moriarty, may have taken up residence in the Old Town.
Upon arrival, Holmes tells Watson of the mysterious events that have taken place there, which have driven most occupants away, involving ghosts and the devil playing bagpipes.
